A traveler's guide to Banff
This is a national park with a town inside it. Parks Canada rules apply, wildlife has the right of way, and the famous lakes now often need a shuttle or reservation. Plan the logistics so the mountains can do the rest.
Banff National Park is the Canadian Rockies at full volume: Lake Louise, Moraine, Icefields Parkway, elk on the edge of town. It is busy in July and a cathedral in September. Hike early, book lodging early, and look up more than you photograph.
Lakes and reservations
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake access is managed in peak season. Check Parks Canada and the current shuttle system before you go. Sunrise is still the move if you can get there.
The drive
The Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper is one of the great road trips. Weather changes fast. Fuel, snacks, and a downloaded map are not optional.
Town
Banff townsite is walkable, touristy, and useful. Eat early after a hike. Canmore is a calmer base just outside the park if lodging is full.
If you only remember this
- Bear spray is a rental, not a souvenir. Know how to use it.
- A Parks Canada pass is required. Buy it before the gate.
- Cell service drops on the Parkway.
- Winter driving needs proper tires. This is not a suggestion.
