A mountain range is reflected in the still water of a lake

Banff

Turquoise lakes, high passes, and a national park town that still feels like a trailhead.

Banff National Park is the Canadian Rockies at full volume: Lake Louise, Moraine, Icefields Parkway, elk on the edge of town. It is busy in July and a cathedral in September. Hike early, book lodging early, and look up more than you photograph.

A Banff itinerary

Tell us how long you have. If a SpaceXAI key is configured, Grok writes the plan. Otherwise you get an editor-built outline from the field guide.

Field guide

This is a national park with a town inside it. Parks Canada rules apply, wildlife has the right of way, and the famous lakes now often need a shuttle or reservation. Plan the logistics so the mountains can do the rest.

Lakes and reservations

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake access is managed in peak season. Check Parks Canada and the current shuttle system before you go. Sunrise is still the move if you can get there.

The drive

The Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper is one of the great road trips. Weather changes fast. Fuel, snacks, and a downloaded map are not optional.

Town

Banff townsite is walkable, touristy, and useful. Eat early after a hike. Canmore is a calmer base just outside the park if lodging is full.

Pack this in your notes

  • Bear spray is a rental, not a souvenir. Know how to use it.
  • A Parks Canada pass is required. Buy it before the gate.
  • Cell service drops on the Parkway.
  • Winter driving needs proper tires. This is not a suggestion.

Icefields Parkway

The lakes are the posters. The Parkway is the trip. Go in September if you can; the larch and the thinner crowds are the move.

Banff is bigger than the postcard

A lake morning before the parking lots fill. Turquoise lakes, high passes, and a national park town that still feels like a trailhead. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. June–September; February–March for skiing is the window I would book again.

Start early in Banff

Icefields Parkway with time to stop, not just drive. A lake morning before the parking lots fill. Give Banff days, not hours, and go in June–September; February–March for skiing. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.
