A traveler's guide to Jaipur
Jaipur is beautiful and commercial. Decide what you came to look at, and let the rest of the offers pass.
Jaipur is the Rajput capital people picture: palaces, a planned pink grid, and forts on the ridges. See one fort properly. Shop less than the city asks you to. The courtyards and the food are calmer than the gem shops suggest.
When to go
November to February is the season, with cool nights and busy hotels. March warms up fast. Summer is harsh. The monsoon is dramatic and less visited. Festival days, especially in autumn, are crowded and worth it if you planned.
Neighborhoods
The old pink grid for the markets and the palace. Amber as a morning trip. A hotel with a courtyard is not a cliché here. It is how you recover from the streets. The other forts are optional once you have done one well.
Eating
Rajasthani thali, kachori for breakfast, and lassi that is a dessert. The rooftop restaurants vary. Eat one meal in a simple local room so the spices are food and not a show.
If you only remember this
- A driver for Amber and the edges.
- Gem and textile pitches are constant. A no is complete.
- Mornings are the fort hours.
- Winter nights need a layer. Days may not.
