high rise buildings during daytime

A traveler's guide to Philadelphia

The historic center is a morning. The city you will remember is the one that starts at lunch.

Philadelphia keeps the old buildings and then feeds you like a much larger city. See the historic rooms in the morning. Spend the rest of the day in neighborhoods that care more about the roast pork than the bell.

When to go

Spring and fall are ideal. Summer is humid and full of visitors. Winter is cold and good for museums and long Italian lunches. Marathon weekend takes over the hotels.

Neighborhoods

Old City and Society Hill for the first walk. Rittenhouse if you want a pretty grid. South Philadelphia for food. Fishtown and Northern Liberties for a younger night. West Philly if the university and the murals are the draw.

Eating

A roast pork sandwich, a tomato pie, and a dining room that has been serious for years. Cheesesteaks are a civic argument. Have one from a place with a short name and a long line, then move on.

If you only remember this

  • The historic sites have timed entry. Book them.
  • SEPTA works for the airport and the center.
  • Walking distance on the grid is honest.
  • Sports nights change the trains and the prices.
