A traveler's guide to Tulum

Sleep in town if you want restaurants and a normal bill. Sleep on the beach road if the sound of the water is the point and you have priced it on purpose.

Tulum is a ruin on a cliff and a beach that used to be a secret. The sand is still pale and the water still clear. The road behind the beach is busier than the postcards, and the town inland is where the week becomes affordable.

When to go

November to April is the dry window. Summer is hot, stunning, and more likely to pile seaweed on the sand. The ruins close in the afternoon heat for a reason.

The beach

The public beaches are real and sometimes a walk from parking. Hotel beaches blur into them. The water deepens quickly and the bottom can be rocky. Sargassum season can hide the sand and then vanish the next month.

In the water

Swimming is best in the morning before the breeze stands up. Cenotes are the other water and a different temperature. A boat toward the reserve is a half-day with a permit culture. Respect it.

If you only remember this

  • The beach road has no sidewalk. Night walking is a bad plan.
  • Cash still matters at the smaller places.
  • The ruin opens early. Be there.
  • Cancún airport is about two hours. That transfer is part of the day, not a footnote.
