Pinnacles National Park
Volcanic spires, talus caves, and condors on a small footprint.
East and west entrances do not connect by park road. High Peaks is the walk. Condors are the lottery. Caves close for bat season. It is a day-trip park from the Bay Area that feels farther California.

Field guide
Pinnacles National Park is a U.S. National Park in California. Volcanic spires, talus caves, and condors on a small footprint.
When to go
February–May is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with high Peaks Trail on a cool morning. Then balconies or Bear Gulch Cave when open. If you have a second day, condor watching from a pullout. Keep one spare hour for west side late light if you enter from Soledad.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Pack this in your notes
- Park in the lot listed for your trail. Overflow in spring is common.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

10/10Start early in Pinnacles National Park
Condor watching from a pullout. West side late light if you enter from Soledad. Give Pinnacles National Park days, not hours, and go in February–May. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.

8/10Pinnacles National Park is bigger than the postcard
Balconies or Bear Gulch Cave when open. Volcanic spires, talus caves, and condors on a small footprint. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. February–May is the window I would book again.
